National Struggles into Local Action

A Rank and File Workshop

There have been a number of racist incidents across workplaces where PCS organises. In 2013/14 there were, on average, 103 racist incidents across England and Wales each day.

The gender pay gap gets wider. In HMRC, for every £10 a man takes home, a woman takes home £8.82.

LGBT+ phobia is on the rise in our workplaces. Survey participants polled by the Trades Union Congress, 68% said they had experienced harassment, with 42% saying colleagues had made unwanted comments about their sex life.

People get sacked for having a disability. Neurodiversity is also ignored. 7 in 10 employers ignore Neurodiversity.

Group One:

You receive reports of numerous incidents of a racist nature in your workplace. Management are not taking the right action and people are suffering ill mental health and are unable to come to work because of the lack of action.

Your task is to build a grass routes campaign that highlights the daily injustices faced by BAME colleagues and does something about it.

You must consider the employer to be hostile, refusing to let you use work systems to send emails and refusing to let you have meetings on site.

You need to create:

  • A campaign slogan
  • information you would include on materials
  • a campaign strategy to get all colleagues, regardless of heritage, involved
  • a communications plan

Group Two:

You notice that your colleagues are getting requests for part time working refused. Upon further investigation, you identify that these colleagues are predominantly women who have young children but ‘business needs’ is the only reason given by management.

How do you create a campaign at a grass routes level to defend these workers?

As with the first group, your employer is hostile and you cannot use any employer facilities in this campaign.

You need to create:

  • A campaign slogan
  • information you would include on materials
  • a campaign strategy to get all colleagues involved
  • a communications plan

Group three:

A contact centre takes sickness very seriously. Many of your disabled colleagues have been put on warnings. Many colleagues who have Autism/Aspergers/ADHD are on warnings for poor performance. All of the above is because the employer hasn’t considered proper reasonable adjustments.

Workers in this call centre are downtrodden and feel that they won’t win any fight they take to the employer.

How do you create a campaign to overcome this?

You need to create:

  • A campaign slogan
  • information you would include on materials
  • a campaign strategy to get all colleagues involved
  • a communications plan
